White and raw riempies back in stock.

White Riempies

White leather thonging

See Restoration page for pics of riempied chairs

As a natural product, the width and thickness does vary slightly along the length.

White riempies average about 2m/yds long and are 5-6mm wide and 4-6mm thick.

We will send a mix of lengths.    Price per riempie

We have found that it is best to use these dry but you can soak in lukewarm water for 20-30mins before use.  The supplier does NOT recommend soaking.

The average riempie chair or bench with a seat with 8 or 9 holes per side, will need about 4-5 strips.

Your order will include a selection of lengths - averaging at least 2m

Download instructions for DIY riempieing with white riempies.

The method for using raw riempie is similar but requires a much longer soaking in cold water.

For a sample of riempie or any seat-weaving material; send a stamped self addressed envelope and 2 First Class stamps.

Raw Riempie

The correct material to use on antique furniture.

Also used as RAWHIDE on North American canoes

Needs to be soaked for several hours in cold water before use

Available in 6mm or 8mm wide and approximately 2.5mm thick, in one or two continuous lengths.

As a natural product, the width and thickness does vary along the length

Each order of raw riempie seems to be different.

At the moment, we only have the more translucent type on the left.

Rattan  CANE
for traditional hand caning

Weights are approximate due to moisture contents

Owing to the ongoing Indonesian rattan embargo, the price of cane has risen and we have had to raise ours as well.

I have 'sourced' a supply of 'Gold label' cane which is far better than most.

However, the cost is higher compared with other suppliers.

DANISH   CORD

Danish cord was manufacturered in England as well as Denmark but the English manufacturer has now stopped producing it and I am not importing any due to the cost.

I do still have lots of:

Danish cord nails - 6p each.  These have shanks of either 20mm or 25mm

Replacing staples with nails is a very time consuming affair.  If you have access to one, it is easier to use a stapler, preferably a narrow crown with narrow crown staples.  Available from Axminster tools.  If you must use nails, I suggest that you drill tiny (staggered) pilot holes first to avoid the seat rail splitting.

Rotacane - A plastic 'centre cane' used for making baskets and trays as well as seat weaving

No longer made but we try to keep some in stock, both cream and buff, staking and weaving.                                         Email or phone for details
